Very small amalgam fillings can be replaced with a direct composite filling

The recommended restorations for replacing amalgams are 'indirect' composite/porcelain inlays or crowns (made by a technician), this is dependent on the size of the amalgam needing to be replaced.

Inlays/Onlays
The tooth is skilfully measured and trimmed and a highly accurate impression is made of the prepared surface. This impression is used to create a model of the tooth, which is then sent to a dental laboratory that will create a porcelain or composite (tooth coloured) restoration called an inlay or onlay. The inlay or onlay is then cemented into the prepared surface of the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are stronger than direct fillings due to the fact that they are created in a laboratory. In addition, inlays and onlays fit extremely well into the prepared surface of the tooth, reducing the size of the seam between the restoration and the tooth.

A ceramic inlay has real advantages if someone is allergic or sensitive to petrochemicals.

Crowns and Bridges
A crown (often called a cap) covers the tooth and restores it to its original shape and size. The tooth is skilfully measured and trimmed and a highly accurate impression is made of the prepared surface. This impression is used to create a model of the tooth which is then sent to a special laboratory that will create a porcelain (tooth coloured) crown. The crown is then cemented onto the prepared surface of the tooth.

Crowns are very strong and they are used to protect the remaining tooth structure. In the hands of a skilled dentist, a crown will fit extremely well onto the prepared surface of the tooth, reducing the size of the seam between the crown and the tooth.

Crowns are excellent restorations and are highly durable.

Reinforced all-porcelain crowns have now been available for over ten years. They are not to be confused with porcelain bonded to metal crowns which are more common, but which invariably have nickel and palladium as two of the metals within the alloy used. Here at the holistic dental centre we have researched a more bio-compatible alloy to be used in our porcelain bonded to metal crowns which does not contain the afore mentioned.

Composite 'Direct' Fillings
In our centre we use the latest materials for dental fillings. In the case of direct fillings (placed at the Practice, during one visit) we use composite materials. These materials imitate the natural colour and translucency of each tooth. Hybrid composites also have increased mechanical resistance which have reduced abrasion, washing away and fracturing.

We also use the most up-to-date composites for aesthetic, almost invisible fillings and restorations.

Following preparation, the dentist places the composite in layers, using a light specialized to harden each layer. When the process is finished, the dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth. The dentist then polishes the composite to prevent staining and early wear.

Bridges and partial dentures (click here for more information)
There are two main ways to replace the missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge. A bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth.

Dentures (click here for more information)
A denture is an appliance which is worn to replace lost or missing teeth to enable you to enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. A complete or full denture is one which replaces all of the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaws. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by lost or missing teeth and is attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments.

Crowns (click here for more information)
A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’.

Implants
Dental implant restorations are cosmetically matched to your other teeth and securely fixed so that they look and feel like your own natural teeth.

We can refer you to a specialist of your choice for implant placement and are then more than happy to make the crown or bridgework that sits on top of the implant. If you do not know of a reputable implant surgeon - we have specially trained colleagues at Elmsleigh House who use implant systems which are recognised for their quality and have a proven track record of success.
